Going to Cuba next month. What gifts should I bring?

I've heard it's good to bring soaps and pads of paper, but when it comes to actually handing them out, what it the ettiquite for giving someone a bottle of shampoo?

Basically bring any household items like soaps, shampoo, pens, pencils, pads of paper etc. At the hotel you are staying at, leave some on the pillow on the bed when you leave the room in the mornings.
