I know that it is not the best way to decide on a job but I am hoping that one of you guys can give me a little advice that could nudge me in the right direction. After MONTHS of temporary work, I have finally been offered 2 brilliant roles. Both are Fashion Buyer roles. Role 1 is product I used to deal with/same suppliers/friendly company/decent travel but a 2hour commute to work. Role 2 is very prestigious product/people a little more aggressive/more kudos/1hour commute/slightly less salary/lots of travel. Both have their good and bad points. Believe me, I am weighing this up carefully and will not choose the job based solely on what is said here but if anyone has had a similar dilemma, I would be grateful for any advice....Thanks! x

The answer depends on your overall goal. The job with Kudos and "position" may in the long term provide the springboard to other more financially lucrative jobs later on down the road. The job with more salary and a friendlier atmosphere may provide stability and support. It depends on what is more important to you at this point in your life.
Plus the commute is an overlooked thorn. 2 hours every day especially if it is a busy drive can be an exhausting experience and a costly one. So weigh this equally with the job description. Money is not everything in life and i have learnt that lesson the very hard way. I find Balance more important than Money or prestige especially today.

Role 2 might pose more of a challenge for you initially, but the prestige of the product as well as the added experience could make it worth your while. Plus, a 2 hour commute does not sound like fun. Either way, good luck with your decision!

Go for something new, if you have delt with the other product before you have to think about if you want to go back to that and the reasons you left in the first place. The whole travelling with the other job would lead me to say yes straight away!! Do not look at it being aggressive, look at it as a new challange, not the comfort of falling back into something you already know.

Looking at this, I would say it depends on how ambitious you are. Is fashion buying a career you want to go further in? Is your job status important to you? Then go with the job with less salary, but more prestige. But if quality of life matters to you more at this point than your career, pick the job that will make you happier, which sounds like the first one.

Regardless, good luck!

If the salary is competitive with either job, I would choose the job that you feel the most comfortable with. I think one of the most important factors in liking your job is the people you work with and the company you work for. If you already know one company and like it, that is definitely an advantage. Go with your gut on this one.

Ask yourself this simple question.

Which company do you see yourself working for in 2 yrs & 5 yrs from now. And in what position?

Do they promote from within? What if any type of benefits do they have?

Is traveling 2 hours worth of your time everyday to and from 5-6 days of week for more money?

To me, it has worked out that the boss counts the most, in other words it's so important to like who you work for and who you work with. A few extra bucks a year doesn't make up for poor management.

My father once told me, "if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life." Probably not too helpful? Trust your "gut" instinct.

Congrats!!!
