I am 5 weeks 2 days postpartum. I have been having horrible period cramps and others similar pms symptoms (mood swings, salt/sugar cravings), and had a little bit of spotting a couple of days ago, but no period. i hear that the first period is the worst (I have another child but don't remember what it was like after her), and the cramps are definitely horrible. Should I be cramping so much (it's been about 5 days) for so long? What were your experiences like?

the reason why i'm asking is- i had intercourse with my husband (protected), and i'm just terrified that i might have gotten pregnant... no breast pain thank god, but still paranoid and terrified just the same...

I had my baby over a month ago and my period came about a week ago and it was very weird, I never have had a period that last longer than 5 days and this one I still have and the first 4 days it was so strong, that I had to us overnight pads and when I changed (every hour like clock work) they would be full of blood, and the cramps were so bad I wanted to cry, Tylenol didn't work for me at all. It was gone yesterday, but this morning around 11:30, it came back down.

With my first child, I got my first real period about 6 weeks postpartum. I started the day before I was to go to my midwife for my postpartum check so, I hadn't had sex with the hubby yet because I wasn't given the all clear (had an episiotomy). It was the most horrible period I had ever had! I'm not one to get bloated, crampy, etc. but I did that time. I seriously felt like I was going into labor again! Midwife said it was normal to feel that way since your uterus may not have shrunk back down to pre-pregnancy size and it was overcompensating for the bigger size with the cramps. Hope that helps!

I didn't get mine until 13 weeks postpartum. I breastfed for 3 weeks and this did make the cramps worse. *It is really good for the baby though if he/she doesn't have digestive issues** I had my period for about 2 weeks and it was surely alot ALOT ALOT. I was scared but my sisters said it was normal. My next 3 periods were pretty heavy. Our son is now 6 months old and the cycles have been normal but I still sorry TMI but I still bleed more than before. Our bodies go through natural changes and unless you really feel like something is definately wrong rather than just unsure than I recommend going to the doctor. We all heal differently and something may be wrong that needs attention. Are they cramps & contractions or does it feel like something more?

I don't know how long other women's periods took but I didn't get mine until I was done nursing and then it took 2 months later to finally get it. So I completely understand the fear of thinking you are pregnant. But my period was horrible the first time. I had some spotting and cramping before it turned into the worst period ever.

I would say it all depends on how much you normally cramp during periods. If you are concerned, always go to the doctor.
I got my first period three months after giving birth and found it wasn't horrible at all, but significantly lighter and better, and has been every since.

i did have the spotting, but i had absolutely no problem with the 1st postpartum menses being any worse than any other. the cramps can get bad from time to time, but that is the uterus returning to it's pre-pregnancy size.
hang in there, take some tylenol if it gets too much to deal with, and a heating pad can also be soothing.
feel better quickly!

Girl I'm in the exact same position!! I'm now 4weeks/5days post partum and DH and I had sex (unprotected..stupid I know) and I now I'm having the same things as you (cravings, spottin, cramping, etc...)
I remember with my son my first period afterwards was horrible...very heavy, baaaad cramps, acne, moodswings. I was told its normal because your body is still adjusting to not being pregnant and getting back into the swing of things.

That's the way it was for me. Except I had a ton of blood for like 4days. The cramps are your uterus contracting back into shape after having been straight out for so long. Mine were so bad I thought I was going to die!
