light/dark - imagine you were shining a torch on a ball and it was rotating (spinning around) - only the part facing the torch will be lit up by it - the same happens with the earth and the sun.

When we are facing the sun we have day, when we are facing away we have night.
If you are referring to the tilt of the earth then when our hemisphere (North in the case of Britain) is tilting towards the sun, it is out summer and when it is tilting away it is our winter.
hope this helps
