Get two, by all means. They love to play and cuddle with each other!

Cannibalism usually results when there are babies born into too small of a cage to a stressed-out mother gerbil. Also, never feed your gerbils meat, as that can make them more agressive and prone to cannibalism, too.

Only buy from a pet store that you trust to pick out same sex gerbils. Also, younger gerbils will learn to get along better than two (esp. male) animals who have just been introduced.

Some other tips:

Water bottles tend to leak, and wet bedding can kill gerbils. Avoid this by offering pieces of lettuce every day or so. Gerbils are desert animals, and really don't need tons of water. I've never had a water bottle in my gerbil cages.

Also, be sure to provide fun, munchy paper (like toilet paper rolls and junk mail) for your gerbils to make bedding out of.

Two! Gerbils are sociable and are happier when there are other gerbils around to cuddle with and play with. Just try to get two of the same sex that either live together now or hav lived together before. Don't get two and then try to MAKE them get along. It doesn't always work that way, unfortunately.

Two males or two females doesn't really make much of a difference. The personalities of males and females are different, but as long as they're the same, it's okay. My favorite little hamsters were my boys, but that's just me! They had the best personalities. :)

Gerbils should be kept in pairs, they are social creatures.

Males, from what I understand, seem to have less likelihood of fighting after introduced, as females tend to be more aggressive.

Get two...they should get along as long as they are from the same litter. Just get two of the same, doesn't really matter if they're male or female.
