How can ANYONE just throw it out and quip that Vai "sucks" - you're a friggin idiot!
Steve Via is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Anyone who is credited in the liner notes of Frank Zappa's albums as playing "stunt" or "impossible" guitar must be worth his salt huh!?
I actually saw Steve Vai play live for the first time two nights ago at the Zappa PLays Zappa show and he totally stole the show. His solo on Zombie Woof was utterly incredible. He is someone who sounds just as good and amazing live as he does on studio records. He certainly does not "suck" as some other waste of DNA so eloquently put it a little higher up in these answers. He's a guitar hero.
If you don't think so....go suck a tail pipe!

Look into Gary Hoey and Joe Satriani as well if you like Vai. He did a concert w/ them known as the 3G Tour back around 97' Was an awesome concert and soundtrack.
