If you use post to send variables in php, eg username and password, how can a hacker acces this information?
Also what difference does it make if it is on SSL?

Really, as long as you make your site semi secure you're be fine. Hackers won't sit there and do a brute force attack, those are things of the past. If somebody really wanted to hack your site, they do would some social engineering to get passwords. So really it's not about the technology anymore, it's about insiders being dumbasses and giving away crucial information.

Well, windows based applications are very easy to hack because of the language they're written in. That's why I use Linux, much safer and no antivirus required, yet anyway.

SSL is a secure connection so it's safer, it basically encrypts your username and password and anything else you enter. Hackers can still get this info by using cracker softwares that will bruteforce the password/username.
