I have a CDL (class A), and from the less than one year experience that I have, I found that one can work in construction, drive a bus (but you need a passenger endorsement), and there are a lot of companies that employ local drivers (home nightly).
I work for a company that offers both over the road and local jobs, and it is not required that you unload the truck (a real plus). A lot of companies that have local jobs driving require you unload the truck, or are one of those side-loading things, like jobs for Pepsi, or coke-cola.
Also, I live next to an area that is kinda near ports, so truck drivers are needed to pull those containers from the ports to various locations.
Good luck.

I used to work for my county and there are a lot of jobs there for class A drivers. From equipment operating to hauling they have many different choices. That is if you wouldn't mind a government job....good benefits though

Short haul driving. Pays a lot less because you're home every night.
