WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rep. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, who incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped to head the Intelligence Committee when the Democrats take over in January, failed a quiz of basic questions about al Qaeda and Hezbollah, two of the key terrorist organizations the intelligence community has focused on since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

When asked by CQ National Security Editor Jeff Stein whether al Qaeda is one or the other of the two major branches of Islam — Sunni or Shiite — Reyes answered “they are probably both,” then ventured “Predominantly — probably Shiite.”

That is wrong. Al Qaeda was founded by Osama bin Laden as a Sunni organization and views Shiites as heretics.

Reyes could also not answer questions put by Stein about Hezbollah, a Shiite group on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations that is based in Southern Lebanon.

Incredible, but even worse is that a convicted bribe taker is on the committee. He should not have access to classified information.

This really shouldn't surprise anyone.. I think the Democrats mud slinging dirt digging approach to their elections were and are a cover up for their lack of knowledge in areas that will ultimately take a strong leader to handle. At no time did we hear a plan from these people because they have no clue.. I think any American that actually follows the war in Iraq knows the difference between the Sunni and Shiites. Somethings are not "confidential" material..

Just another Self-Destructive move on the Democrat side of the aisle. They are really making this way too easy.

People are going to learn quickly whom they have elected, and see very quickly that the situation is certainly no better than the one previous to it.

I think this batch of inept dems will be one term-ers.

Just another reason for the insurgents to become more emboldened.
