1) It is the largest, at least in terms of budget, intel agency in the US.
2) As far as we have been told, it is a bunch of geeks.
3) There is no reason to think we have been told everything.

In federal government circles (particularly the military) it is referred to as "No Such Agency".
They are not the people you hear clicking in on your phone call; That would be the FBI.
They're not the people who overthrow dictators & install friendly puppet regimes: That would be the CIA.

The NSA is primarily a cryptologic agency, so yes, it's a lot of surveillance.
I don't have the security clearance necessary to know a more expansive answer to your question. And if I did, I'd have to kill you. ;)
