What will keep you reading a book until the very last chapter?
Suspense, mostly. Not being able to figure out what's going to happen next is the biggest driving force. If, before the last chapter, I've got it figured out, why read the end?

Are there books that you got bored with and quit?
Heck, yes. I am not a typical woman in what I read or the movies I watch. The really mushy romantic ones really turn my stomach. One of my friends gave me a Danielle Steel book one time. I stopped after about the 3rd chapter. Bleh!

What about ones that really turned you onto the author?
Dean Koontz, in my opinion, is a great author. His use of imagery and the suspense he builds keeps me turning the pages (sometimes when I should be sleeping!). I really enjoy most of his plots and the unexpected turns he takes. I was hooked after Intensity.

Do you read best sellers or unknowns?
Mostly, I read in one genre -- suspense thrillers, and mostly I read Koontz, but I'll read King or even an unknown if the blurb on the back catches my interest. It has to make me say, "Ooooo! Interesting," with a raised eyebrow. ~_^

the thing that will keep me reading till the last chapter is if the story has intersting characters and story line.sometimes the author keeps repeating the same facts over and over again that gets me bored i and i skim through these parts.
there are some books but not many that i got bored with and quit an example of that was Fat Tuesday by Sandra brown i just could not get into this book even though i have read other books by her and they were ok.
my favorite books of all time are Gone With the Wind and How Green Was My Valley. my favorite authors are Jane Austen, Stephen King, Charles Dickens, Taylor Caldwell and Danielle Steel
i read both best sellers and unknowns. right now i am reading books by Nicholas Sparks, i think they are OK but overrated.

The pace has to be farely quick, the author has to have a good knowledge of what he or she is writing as well.

Yes, I have gotten bored in the middle of a book and at the "dead" part (this is the part in between the Climax and the rising action, usually in the last quarter of the book). I stopped reading Harry Potter because of this.

I love Meg Cabot. I read one of her books, and after that read about ten more.

I tend to read unknowns. Bestsellers are nice, but everyone else has read them/they are sometimes hard to find. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I often do. The cover is there to tell you what kind of book you are reading. Chances are if Fabio is on it, you are going to be reading a romance novel.

I would say that I finish about 85% of books that I start with some exceptions. I have never finished War and Peace despite two valiant attempts. Once I got almost two hundred pages into it, and the second I got about a hundred. There are lots of books that I finish that I wish I hadn't wasted the time on though.

There are many books that I enjoyed so much that I decided to read 'everything' by that author. Orson Scott Card, for example, I loved Ender's Game so much. It was my first taste of science fiction, and I loved it. It was required for a course, and after that I have read and bought almost everything the author has written. Sarah Dessen and Joan Bauer are other examples. Stephenie Meyer is yet another.

I do not decide 'what to read' based on a book or an authors bestselling status. I read what appeals to me. It doesn't matter to me if there are millions of other fans around the world who love that book or only a hundred or so.

What it depends on is access. Is it available at any of my local or university libraries? Does my friend have a copy she's willing to loan out? Does it appeal enough to me that I'm confident enough to order it through Amazon or buy it at a bookstore? I'm fortunate in that I get to borrow books from a review center at my university a few months each year. I get to read hundreds of books that I wouldn't necessarily even know about otherwise.

What I trust more than bestseller status or reviews (starred or not) are trustworthy recommendations by friends.

As to what will keep me reading...it's simple:

1) great characters that are well-developed and human. It's crucial to a story that each of the main characters at least be well fleshed out and have strengths and weaknesses.
2) good writing. It doesn't have to be perfect. I'm not looking for outstanding literary quality that goes above and beyond all one's expectations. But it has to flow fairly well. It has to be good enough to not be distracting. If it is too heavy with metaphors or cliches or written with heavy, fake-sounding dialect, for example, or if you get bogged down trying to figure out just what the sentence is saying--there is one recent book whose author LOVED to write sentences with like 5 semicolons, 35 commas, etc. Also poorly written descriptions that try to hard.
3) interesting plots. Every plot doesn't have to be unique, original, or edge-of-the-seat fantastic. Every book doesn't have to be full of exciting, heart-racing adventure and danger. But what each book should have is a plot that fits well and complements the characters. As a reader you should like the characters and want to know what happens to them.

I have to like and care about the characters. I always stop reading a book if the author used bad grammar, and many NY Times bestsellers do.
If I like an author, I read everything he has written. Among those I really like are James Lee Burke, Orson Scott Card, Sherri Tepper, and John Grisham.

1. The only book I've ever been bored with was called "The View From Saturday".

2. I love books that are action-packed and unpredictable! I usually stick to the fantasy genre.

3. Both! I love everything from Tolkien and J.K. Rowling to Merideth Ann Peirce. From Cherry Hill's horse books to Harper Lee.

Questions and unresolved conflicts often keep a reader turning the pages. This is a good indicator why you can always find mysteries and suspense novels on the best sellers list.
