I want to start selling in a flea market once a month, but I want to do it as a side job and not mess around with the whole sales tax thing. Nobody seems to collect sales tax, but are they suppose to? Or are flea markets and garage sales exempt from collecting sales tax?

Sales tax must be charged at a flea market but not a garage sale. A sellers permit is required in California.

Here in N.C. I believe that you don't need a tax number for yard sales or if you set up every now and then but if your a full time vendor I think you need a tax number. I sale Beef Jerky at the Fleamarket every now and then if your interested I can help you get started?

I just started a food vending booth at a flea market. Here in South Carolina, you buy a tax license that is good for a year. Mine cost $50/year.
