Me and some fellow student's are trying to start our own middle school newspaper. Problem is, we don't know what type of topics our paper should cover.
We have already obtained ideas such as: Sports updates, news sections, and comics.

We really need help with this, we really want to make something that will interest our classmates and other students. Any idea will help, as long as it's school apropriate.

Thank you!

You could have a poetry or short story contest (or both!). The winner would get their story or poem published in the newspaper. Advertise fundraisers happening in the school to help out different groups such as Chorus, Band, Different clubs, not just the sports. Profile Teachers of Excellence. Have students take a survey or let you know who their favorite teachers are and why. Maybe even give suggestions on how to support good teachers (be helpful in class, volunteer, etc.). You might also profile different students that have unusual hobbies, backgrounds, are from a different country, etc.

A great column would be tips to stop bullies. How to help others or be a good community member such as help new students, don't exclude people just because others like to make fun of them, that sort of thing. Safety tips would be good. Dealing with siblings and other relatives. A pet peeve column. There are so many things besides the standard reporting about sports scores and events, the lunch menus, etc. Depending on how many people you have to work on the paper, you can put in quite a lot. Good luck and have fun!

The way to get this paper read is to keep the articles about the students. Any stories that include actual students will be read. Is there a foreign student with a story to tell? Maybe a student who volunteers for a good cause? Student atheletes will fit into your sports section nicely. You can also profile staff members who aren't well known but interesting. find out what hobbies the janitor is into. What's the librarians favourite book? Ask the teachers who has interesting stories to tell and I bet you'll get a lot of article ideas. If you want a paper for the students, put the students in your paper. Include pics too, this is important.

You could do a story on how it's important to spell correctly (hint, hint) and use proper punctuation in writing. I say this somewhat sarcastically because your post has several errors. But I'm also being serious, because misspellings and poor punctuation can and will hurt you in the future, whether it be in high school, college, applying for a job, etc.

You could tie the subject in with the proliferation of text messaging and how the practice has caused many kids your age not to pay attention to the rules of English.

Talk with an English teacher or two, your principal, maybe an editor at your local newspaper, and even a local legislator. Did you know that the interpretation of a lot of laws hinges on where a comma is or isn't?

In addition to the Sports, News, and Comic sections, you could do a "Dear Abby" column - those are always fun. You could also create some word puzzles or brain teasers. Whatever you do, stay away from printing anything even remotely similar to a "gossip column". Have fun!
