it really depends on what you are willing to spend. Of course the older the child the higher the gifts get. I have a 11 year old son and he likes remote control cars, and playstation things. Does that help any

If he is into science stuff then National Geographic has a line of kids stuff at Target. Things like lab kits, astronomy stuff and geology, etc... Otherwise, anything fun like a game, skateboard... If he is into trendy clothes then you can also get him a cool hoodie. If all else fails, a giftcard and he can pick out his own gift.

Find out if he likes video games and if he has one, then get a gift card to like walmart or etc where he could buy himself a game to play on the system.

I had an 11 year old boy to shop for... and while its not a cell phone, target has 4 mile walkie talkies for 17 bucks. I thought that was pretty cool for a kid that age.
