1) can autozone check to see what it is for free?

One or more brake pads is worn down to the backing plate and is dragging on the rotor even after you release the brake pedal. It is kinda wierd and conter-intuitive but sometimes worn out brakes only grind when you are not applying them. Seen it enough times to feel strongly that is what you are dealing with.

Take it in for a brake inspection.

Wheel Bearing. The brakes are centering and holding the wheel upright, which quiets the noise. Once you let off, the wheel is free to move around. You may also notice the volume of the grind increase when you turn left or right. Same reason....Wheel Bearing....

I didn't think autozone had a mech. on duty. but if they do he will be able to give you a answer. mosts inspection are free anywhere.
