I have burn stains on the bottom of my pots and pan. I know that regular dishwashing detergent doesn't help.

Let the bottoms of your pans site over night in ketchup.
In the morning the burnt spots will wash right off.

Dampen the pot(easy assuming it is the bottom of the inside), not real wet. Sprinkle enough baking soda to cover the burnt on food area well. It will absorb the moisture and stay there and soften the burned on area and allow it to be easily removed with a non-scratching scrubber. You could add a few more drops of water as needed, making sure that the entire burnt area is covered in the damp baking soda. The baking soda should be damp enough to not be powdery anymore but not so wet that it slides about easily. If it is burnt in another place you could(I think) place a damp paper towel well dipped in baking soda over the problem area, and push it down til it is flush against the problem area, let it sit for a while, could be an hour for bad problems. I don't think it will hurt metal or glass, hasn't hurt my stainless steel pots, don't know about Aluminum pots though. This doesn't work for old stuff baked on glass dishes though.

I use a Mr. Clean magic eraser. They have a new one out that is more durable and doesnt fall apart so quickly. It keeps my pans like new.
