I have raised rats in the past and there are a few differences. Pets rats are friendlier than wild ones, and have been raised by people since they were born. They carry less (if any!) diseases and generally are very tame. How baby are the babies? There is a chance they could bite you (same as a puppy or a kitten) but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Rats are greats pets to have. Good luck with yours!

Wild rats and "pet rats' are typically the same. Generally the white or bi color "pet/lab" rats are norway rats, the same big ones that so many people are grossed out by. (why i don't know, I love them). There is no difference really. A pet rat is just a wild rat that has been domesticated, whether how long it's family has been in domestication, it is stil lthe same, smart, beautiful and loving creature it would be in the wild, except nicer to you!

Pet rats are different from wild rats in the same way dogs are different from wolves. Because rat lifetimes/generations are so much shorter than that of dogs they are actually more domesticated than dogs. Domestic rats have shorter, weaker teeth, shorter noses, sleeker fur and are more friendly than wild rats. Generally even if they are colored to match their surroundings they would be unable to survive in the wild.

Your babies won't bite you if you are very gentle with them, and give them time to get use to you and their new surroundings.

Here's a couple of pages that I did for my website on the differences between wild rats and domestic rats.

i should think that your rat would bite you until you train it not to bite you. and the main different is that pet rats get tame and are less risk of getting disease other than wild rats. also pet rats live longer than wild rats!!

Pet rats are bred to be pets. I have had 3 of them, and they are very gentle, loving pets. They grow quite large, but as long as you give them plenty of time out of their cage as "play" time, they will be very loving pets. They can even be trained to fetch, and to do tricks. Mine used to sleep curled up under my son's chin when he took a nap.
