funnygrrl is only half right. Older children do function better later in the day. You can do a search of research articles to find evidence of that. Younger kids, on the contrary, tend to do better earlier in the day and slow as the day goes on (tell that to anyone with a 2 year old!!!). Based on research and common sense, high school should probably be starting later and going later in the day and elementary school should probably be starting earlier and not going as late. Of course we have this all messed up because education is still based on the business model where adults are expected to be up early and often be to work between 7 and 9 am and stay until 3 to 5pm. For a high schooler, 9-3 would be good times for school whereas elementary should really start at 8 and only go until about 2 as younger kids usually lose interest and are ready for fun and a break by this time.
It does not matter much. I would predict that, with NCLB and other federal legislation, that school days will probably end up getting longer to meet the increasing demand of testing and acountability.

I htink high school times are about right. The first few periods should be limited to less difficult subject matter, giving students and teachers time to wake up and get involved in the day before challenging the thought process. The day could start perhaps a little later, but certainly should not be lengthened.

Yes, high school sould start at least at 9am because teenagers are on a different biological sleep cycle than adults and they need the extra sleep in order to keep from being zombies in their classrooms. Most teenagers can't even get to sleep until after midnight anyway...

What are they changing to or from? It depends on where you live what times you go to highschool. Do you mean start times? End times? Class times? (block vs traditional classes?)

teenagers bodies have a lot of trouble because of the release of horomones and chemicals. there are chemicals in our bodies that make us tired. they are not released untill later for teens. also we cant really wake til like 8 so the first hour isn't even comprehended by most of us.
