I might be wrong, but I was under the assumption that tax on tax is illegal in this country. According to the Board of Equalization, it's not. Right now, in California, for each gallon of gas, there's 18 cents state tax, and 18 cents Federal tax included. On top of that, the state charges the regular sales tax of 8.25%. I was told this tax is charged after the state and federal taxes. So, if gas costs $1/gallon, then we're paying 8.25% on $1.36, not $1. Does this sound wrong to anyone else? If not, can someone explain why it's not?

we have it in EU (a tax called vat) and it's calculated over the other taxes as well.
A tax on taxes is just insane I know, but you're not alone.

We should have a higher gas tax than this. The current gas tax that we have out here should be raised by at least 35 cents per gallon for regular and 45 cents for premium since the people who drive cars that take premium can obviously afford to pay a little extra money as they have already been doing so.

Sounds like a crock. I wasn't aware we paid that extra tax.

I remember when gas cost a dollar a gallon. Oh, the glory days.

If the fair tax were implemented, we wouldn't have to worry about being taxed like this. But we don't have enough politicians with balls to be a leader. They worry too much about what someone that gives them money to campgain with might say.

I believe it is illegal since they are taxing a tax. But I believe it was Regan who started this and no one has reversed it since it benefits government, and why would the government stop something that benefits them?

Welcome to all government reality . . . government is based on taxes . . . even the feds have a % tax on income that includes taxes paid to other entities.
Fighting tax legality is pissing into the wind.
Your only hope is to convince enough people that it is excessive and try and get it reduced.
