If you really want seaside, you will have to go outside San Francisco. Half Moon Bay is quite nice - 30 minutes south of San Francisco - and it wont break your budget.

I do not know of any sea-side places in San Francisco. San Francisco fronts to the SF. BAY. Along the sea side there are mostly parks, homes and the cliff house. In SF anything close to the cost will not likely be within a budget. Anything in the Fisherman's Wharf area (the Bay type place) definately will not.

You may want to check out bed and breakfast places in SF in general.

Are you really locked into SF for any reason other then Vacation?

If not, stay in SF for a bit but consider two other options

Montrey about 3-4 hours south. Beautiful beaches and coast lines, a nice selection of various types of places, and Carmel, Cannery Row, and the Aquarium all within a short hop (take bicycles for a really good time if it is not raining). There is one hotel right in the middle of Cannery Row which backs up right on to the beach.... beautiful view, nice sounds, and fireplaces in the rooms.. Last year I think it was $190 for the night.

Oakland: Right across the bay from and a nice 15 min or so Ferry ride to SF (or BARTD - the underground/underbay transit). Lots of hotels along the same bay .. (and of course from here you get a view OF SF.. something the other side can not offer). Your budget will thank you.

Ok.. hope that helps...

Budget and seaside don't really mix.

If it's more budget, there are good motels on Van Ness near the Golden Gate which are easy walking distance to water and the fisherman's wharf area.

Try the Comfort Inn, 2775 Van Ness. I stayed there. Decent quality for a low price. Tricky parking, but parking is tricky all over San Fran.

Well not in SF but Pacifica has a place and it's about 15 minutes from the SF Zoo and about 20 to downtown SF. It is on the beach its the Best Western Lighthouse Hotel. Really close to the waves and great sunsets come January!
