An ex-friend of mine said:
'If you can't afford university it's your parents fault for not working hard at school and getting a decent job.'
Do you this is snobbish?

I'm from the UK. It was why we broke up because I can't afford university because my dad's elderly and my mum's disabled.
The reason I'm asking is because everyone called me unreasonable and stupid when I said he was snobby.

Extremely snobby, and couldn't be further from the truth in the US.
You didn't say where you live, but in the US, pell grants make college virtually free for poor college students. Low income student loans are available for everyone.
Not everyone needs to go to college, to make a decent living, either. One just has to stay on the same job long enough.
EDIT: I see the Republicans here (Tinker, Yupagee, Producer...) agree your friend was ignorant and snobby. I think that would negate many of the other responses blaming Republicans. Will they see it?

College is just a way for parents to buy jobs for their children. The 6th Grade grammar of college graduates shows that college education is a fraud and should not be rewarded. Birth privileges mean death to a nation.

It's not snobbish, it's incredibly ignorant. That ex-friend of yours is a grade A idiot who needs to read a history book.

We can blame our parents for all of our character defects and inabilities if we so choose. Yet let's not forget they had parents as did they're parents parents. It boils down to we are not responsible for our situation we are very well accountable for it.
Snobbish? I would say yes.
