Are you from Detroit because you don't say. I am fom Detroit and I myself judge it. The police can't and won't do anything about crime. The ones who get arrested are the ones that walk right into it. Thank God for their once and twice a year drug raids and criminal roundups or noone would ever get arrested. When you call the police for a crime there are certain areas that they won;t even go into!!! Get real, you want a cushy job go to Birmingham, go to Bloomfield, don't go to Detroit.
The schools, don't even get me started on the schools. Our mayor, while he may be a great man to hang out with, he is as crooked as they come. There are indeed good points and hihglights. Greektown, Rencen, our sports teams, the summer festivals, the science center, which is awesome. We get the auto show and last year we did have the Superbowl. But as a whole, our city does stink and i don't see it getting any better. People judge it because they hear it and see it in the news. It is based on factual information. Drugs are bad, crime is bad, welfare is bad, we can't dispute these issues.

The reason why people judge Detroit is because Detroit does not have a good reputation. If you ask someone where I live about what they think about Detroit and they usually think of something bad including a city filled with crime. I believe that the reason why Detroit is critizied a lot is because it has a bad reputation and the city does not want to move forward and I believe that 10 years from now, the City of Detroit will still be trying to figure out how to move foward towards the future.

Because people usually do judge the book by the cover.
If people stuck around long enough they would know Detroit isn't any worse than other cities with high crime rates.
Most suburbs of Detroit are quite nice and I wouldn't move for any other place on this earth.
Crime can happen anywhere, not just in Detroit.

Like it or not, Detroit proper is not very nice, with its crime, abandoned buildings, abandoned homes falling down. And it's dangerous. It's a documented fact. See following link showing Detroit as the #2 most dangerous city in the US and the #1 most dangerous city with a population over 500,000:

Now when you get to the suburbs of Detroit it's a completely different story. Places like Grosse Pointe, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, etc are some of the nicest places in the country. In my opinion the suburbs of Detroit represent the best America has to offer...

The problem is, no one ever hears about the nice parts of the Detroit area. People from outside Detroit judge from what they see and hear on the news and read in the papers.

Too bad people are so judgmental that they don't take the time to get to know an area and miss out on the great things it has to offer.

I feel your pain too...I'm from Houston! :)

I lived in Detroit for like one year and a half. I am from Chicago. The best thing about Detroit is the people. I have met my true sisters from the city. Also, a nice gay/bi/lesbian black community out there. I miss it.

But the city itself, politics, schools is shyt. Nasty city! All over. Lots of negative reasons. My favorite is when my favorite sport radio station out there, was talking about the mayor rolling on dubs in a Range Rover paid nicely by the taxpayers. Acting like a goof during Superbowl. Did I mention its nasty streets!

I lived on 7 mile for a while then Rochester, Huge distance.

OH, to leave on a good note. Best damn strip clubs, what they should be.

I have been to Detroit a few times(Just passing through) and with all due respect to you. I have never seen a city in such a bad state before!! Very old buildings, fifth on the streets everywhere. All I said to my family members is lock the doors of the car and lets get out of here!! Have you been to other cities to compare?
Have you ever come to Toronto, Canada??
Come to see for yourself, and then judge.

I am not sure if the suburbs of Detroit is like this? I would imagine that there are some nice areas as well. It just that I did not stick around long enough to find out. Sorry!!

No disrespect for you at all.

Because they don't know our city and how great it is. We are judged by problems of the past and not what is going on now, and we are also judged by exaggerated observations and heresey. The media likes to play on the negative and ignore the positive.

In the past 2 years we have hosted the Superbowl and the Baseball All Star Games,

Most people just look at the bad sides of Detroit.
You know like how theres a lot of murders and people being robbed and Detroit obviously isnt the richest place on earth so they dont have as nice houses and things like that so people just think that most of it is a horrible place.

There is a movie called the Kentuky Fried Movie and there is a scene where criminals are being sentenced and some get sent to hell and the really bad ones get sent to detroit. It is just known as a violent and dangerous city. Not so much anymore but in the 70's and 80's it was.
