You are correct in that it takes more strength to be kind than to be mean. Some people do take advantage of kind people because not all people are nice. Be kind, but be smart, too. It isn't being kind to one's self if he or she allows another to take advantage of him or her.

I think that many people do use nice people. My mother is an extremely generous person. She owns rental properties and often lets people use her vacant properties for little or no rent to "get on their feet" and she is often taken advantage of and "burned" because of her niceness. I have taken after my mother in that I am a very generous person and I had been taken advantage of a lot because of it, but unlike my mother this has caused me to develop a bit of cynicism and a backbone. I am cautious about who I help and I have no qualms about telling someone no if they have taken advantage of me. I have remained a very nice person though. Some people who feel that good people finish last go to the far end of the spectrum and become totally cynical. I feel that I can be friendly and nice to others and still not be a pushover. I am an inherently sweet person, but if you cross me I have no problem telling you where to put it, lol
People just need to find a balance. I see my oldest son being like I was when I was a kid, a total sap. When I was little you didn’t have to beat me up and take my lunch money, I would give it to you willingly if you just asked. lol
Now if someone is taking my kindness for weakness, I am just honest and let them know how I feel. Usually if they are only using me, they will distance themselves when they realize the gravy train has ended. Otherwise, they will stop using me or I will cut them out of my life. I think if so called pushovers would be honest with how they feel they will be able to see people for what they are worth. A real friend is one that loves you when you are down and out.

Well the beggars in my country have a great sense of finding a nice person and make sure that they extract some money from him, but that does not mean that the person giving charity is weak. No body can take advantage of a kind person without his permission

You have to stop being nice at some point if people are taking advantage of you. You don't want people to think that you are an idiot.

It is hard to deal with. How do you stop the jerks of the world without being a jerk yourself? I tend to not have anything to do with those type of people in the first place. Other than that, I don't know. Good luck.

there are ppl in the world who try to take advantage. they're called manipulators. if you have good boundaries and are assertive, nobody can take advantage of you. the ppl who've told you you'll be taken advantage of, don't have good boundary and assertiveness skills, and apparently have been taken advantage of. rock on and continue to be yourself. you'll go far in life. you'll probably have a lot of friends, a lot of respect, and be very happy and successful. best of luck to you.

Greetings!
A nice person is one that knows:
people tell you who they are
it's up to you to believe them.
When a person is disrespecting you
you have the right to remove yourself from the situation any way you can. Others can only manipulate you when you let them.
Stand up for yourself. You deserve the best.

It's the difference between civilised people and barbarians. The barbarian misreeds civility for weakness.
Unfortunately you have to be rough with barbarians and save your kindness for civilised people.
