While every cell service provider's coverage strength may vary, the overwhelming reason is the amount of concrete and metal building materials often blocking the cell signal. The coverage can penetrate buildings, but the proximity of towers will determine to what extent you will have service. Cell service providers often try to build towers near malls and large shopping areas (somtimes even putting small "repeaters" inside) to ensure better indoor coverage.

Ever since the guys donned the armor suits and went on the shooting rampage, and the police returned heavy sustained fire on them, alot of new high traffic faclities have incorporated a bullet proof construction material to protect the innocent shoppers. As a result, Cell phone reception is blocked to a degree. From there, it falls on the quality of the phone itself.

Radio Waves do not travel well through metal or concrete, I assume the supermarket building is built from both.

Basically when inside the building you are in a Faraday cage, witch blocks Radio Waves.

in most cases, the signal is obstructed by the metal, glass, and brick & mortar on the building. it's hard for radio waves to go through brick and stuff.
