I need to get into a website's image directory so I can see if they have hi-res images, but when I use the URL for the image directory I get a 403 error. Is there a workaround or hack for this situation?

Normally that means you need a username/password.

No, they've set their web server up to prevent any attempts to list the files in the directory. The only thing you can do is to randomly try file names that may exist in the directory to see if any of them exist. You can sometimes get clues to file names based on names of files you do know exist there. If you see there's an image called image01.jpg, you can try seeing if there's an image02.jpg.
