Actually most carnivals use methylene blue, which turns the water blue. Methylene Blue has the ability to act as a Hemoglobin transfer agent in the bloodstream allowing for much more crowded conditions. This is an excellent product when used to move fish too as it also helps with the effects of high ammonia and lessons gill stress caused by high ammonia. But Methylene blue is NOT a food coloring and is best used in hospital aquariums, or shipping containers.

As for true food coloring, there is generally no danger (I once had a drunk at a bar we maintained an aquarium for pour food coloring into the marine aquarium to make it "pretty". Luckily, there were no problems to the fish or surprisingly the invertebrates).
But personally I would not recommend this, and is not worth any possible problems different dyes may cause.

Even if youre using safe colouring, your fish will never be happy to live in a colourful water. Imagine if our air turn red or yellow or pink.

No, do not. Yes, they do it at carnivals. Do you know how many fish die at carnivals or shortly after? Around 95%.

You can colour your water with driftwood or peatmoss, as the tannins will leach out of the wood and tint the water a tea colour. It is natural, and normal. If you want actual colours in your tank, get coloured right and a coloured lightbulb.

not really depence on what kind of fish it is. If its exotic fish and not used to light chemicals then it will die in cople of hours after using the coloure. All stuff like that got chemicals in it. Howeve some fish like carp for fish tanks, and gold fish would not really be effected however there is a small risk. Check the laible and see how much chemicals its got. dont use cheap one

just get some coloured lights for your tank, they work really well and wont harm your fish, they are not pricey either, your pet store or the internet will sell them.

Why exactly would you risk that? Let the water remain the color of water. Never try to alter it, when there are living things inside.

goldfish can handle a bit of food coloring. That is what they use for carnivals. But use it sparingly. Your best bet would be to use a colored light bulb. Why risk killing your fish?
