A lot depends on what you can afford. I recommend a pre season check up. A clean burning furnace will require very little cleaning. Many companies offer pre season check up's at a redused price. Beware of very low prices for the check up. The company can't make a profit at that price. I can guarantee they will find something wrong or offer a service you don't need. Ask friends or neighbors who they use. It's better than taking your chances with the yellow pages. Another bit of advice. If you can, watch them but keep quiet. If they don't want you to watch, call someone else the next time.

Manufacturers recommend a yearly cleaning and changing the filters often (monthly during the heating season). Most good HV companies offer a clean and check in the fall for a fair price.
Remember furnaces can product carbon monoxide and that can be fatal. Maintain your furnace and it will last for many years.

I would suggest getting a service contract where they come out and check everything at the beginning of each season, heating or cooling. and always replace your filters once a month.
This might cost $150 a year, but it is a comfort item and you would spend more than that on other things for comfort.

there are a lot of variables to your question. check with your oil or gas supplier and see what they recommend. i have an oil fired boiler and have it tuned up and cleaned every year. it only runs during the heating season, (i have electric hot water), and that causes the soot to scale up inside of it.

Do change the filter regularly. Especially if you have pets that shed. It will keep it working better and cleaner.
