Your new bird might have a habit of pulling feathers to deal with stress, being bored, or being neglected. Give him a few toys and get a treatment for mites. Put fruit and vegetables in his cage along with different varieties of foods, treat-sticks work great for a underweight bird and add vitamins to his food and water. Put a cover over all but the front of his cage to keep him warm, talk to him without trying to take him out of the cage until he knows you won't hurt him and don't put him in with your other bird. Try putting their cages close but not touching until you are sure he doesn't have mites, just so he has company and isn't bored. If he is meant to make a recovery he will, just move slowly with him and try not to stress him to much. Good Luck

Like many of your other answers have said its probably from his last home. When cockateils are stressed they are prone to pulling out all their feathers. All you need to do for this guy is let him have interesaction with your bird, then give him lots of TLC and his feathers should eventually grow back. This could take awhile though. Also, take him to the vet and have him get a full exam to check for any other problems he might have, and to see if he is sick, do this before you let him in with your bird to keep him from possibly passing anything on to her. Good luck rescuing this little guy! You done a very good thing!

I had one that became addicted to chewing on his own feathers -- he just kept pulling them out. He eventually died of a cold one winter -- very sad, personality-wise he was the best cockateil that we ever had.

As for stopping it, it would be very difficult, being a bird in a cage is pretty boring and once they start this kind of thing I don't know if you can stop it. The only advice I'd give is to make sure you let him out lots and let him have all the toys and mirrors in his cage to try and distract him from his bad habit.

Also it you don't already, make sure you cover his cage at night to keep him warm and keep him away from drafts. A draft from a near-by sliding door is what killed ours.

It could be a number of things most common are stress (feather plucking) and mites. if it is plucking it is very hard to stop a bird from doing it as it becomes a habit.
The bird may be molting however it will not have bald patches and you should see pin feathers which are the small white needle like bits that protect the feather as it grows out the skin.
good luck.

birds sometimes do lose their feathers, its called molting. Its not necessarily a sign of something bad, the bird could be losing its feathers so it can grow new ones.
Or there could be an issue with the bird, the bird could be losing feathers due to stress of a new enviorment or something else more serious. I would seriously suggest to take the bird to the vet just to be safe.
