Daniel Jackson is a fictional character. He was played by James Spader in the movie Stargate and by Michael Shanks the subsequent television series Stargate SG-1. Shanks also played the character in his brief appearance in Stargate Atlantis. He has a Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, and Philology.
