Because American Idol doesn't care if people vote multiple times. When you're dealing with democracy, things like that matter.

Because people would abuse the privilege and vote countless times. Why do you think there are so many votes on American Idol? There ARE people who will sit on a phone for hours voting for their favorite.

There would be no way to verify if the vote was legit or not, and you would have to figure a system for more than one person voting per household. It just wouldn't be worth the trouble for the government to figure that out. We already have enough trouble with the voting system we have now.

A single person can cast multiple votes for the contestants. There's no doubt that political parties would utilize automated calling machines if it were structured the same way.

And if you try to cut that out, there'd be no way to verify if a person is actually voting just once and whatnot.
