We just bought this totally remodeled house six months ago and now the sheet rock on the walls has cracked at pretty much every corner of every doorway and window because of settling. Can that be fixed permanently or just patched every so often? Also, the house has new vinyl siding and we have one strip that keeps popping loose on the bottom. We have put it back in place multiple times but it keeps coming undone. Any ideas?

Actually, these conditions are caused by settling in the ground. The foundation is new and has just been checked. So, any suggestions on the original question?

live with the sheetrock cracks until you are sure the house is done settling. as far as the vinyl siding goes, there are clips made just for this occurrence. they slide into the lock on the top of the lower panel and then you re-hook the upper panel. the clips are available from siding supply houses.

Some cracking and "nail popping" will occur, especially if nails were used or if the framing members have moisture in them. If the house is more than 5-7 years old, the moisture should be gone from the framing members, thus eliminating this cause. If the interior was recently remodeled, it sounds like the drywallers did not use enough mud behind the joints. This is a common problem, especially in "quick flip" houses. If the cracking is limited to above doors and windows, it is possible the joints are located there. However, if the cracking is diagonal, rather than vertical, then settlement is the culprit and a foundation expert should be consulted.

The exterior vinyl siding should have a track that the lower portion snaps into. I would not suggest gluing or nailing this int place as the siding expands and contracts with the weather and buckling can occur. Damage can occur to more than just this piece.

Hope this helps.

If you have that many cracks around and you don't know how to stabilize your foundation, you need to find someone that does. My mother's house sat on an incline on one side, but it was expected to shift cuz she had a support pole in the basement that could be adjusted. Unfortunately, it wasn't maintained, and one side of the house actually started separating from the rest of it. You could actually see outside if you looked at the right spots. Let this be a warning to you. Don't let it go too long because the problem will not go away!

Definitely sounds like a foundation problem! Which is outrageously expensive! I don't know how long the contract is one the home or if prior foundations guy has a warranty on the slab, but I would definitely try and find out!

Someone needs to go under the house and re-shim the foundation before it gets worse.

for the sheet rock you might have to re-tape it and mud it. when you do sheet rock you are not suppost to put a joint over door ways or windows for that reason. its just going to keep cracking.
siding dont know a little bit of glue or silicone in that area. just to help hold it in place.
