i really need help!Could you explain to me the the comparsions and imagery the author uses to make her point use evidence i.e. quotes and line refrences fromt he text, THANKS

SUCCESS is counted sweetest
By those who ne'er suceed
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.

Not one of all the purple host
Who took the flag today
Can tell the definition
So clear of victory

As he, defeated-dying-
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Break, agonizes and clear!

Could you explain to me the the comparsions and imagery the author uses to make her point use evidence i.e. quotes and line refrences fromt he text, THANKS

Imagery uses language that invokes sights, smells, sounds, etc. in the readers' mind that appeal to the physical "senses."

* Taste
Comparing Success to "sweet nectar"
Lines 1 and 3, or Lines 1 - 4 First Stanza

* Sight
Using image of "purple" and "flag"
to represent the victors/victory

* Sound
The "distant strains" of a triumphant march
heard by a defeated soldier

Here in the last two stanzas she compares those who claim triumph with those who are defeated, arguing that success/victory is more dearly valued by the soldier who knows defeat.

Paragraph one doesn't make much sense until you read through the whole poem. It has to do with the losers in a war. To them, victory would have been very sweet. To understand how sweet, one would be in very bad need of that victory.
Paragraphs two and three are dealing with the aftermath of a war. In old days, people who wore purple were usually the nobility. There stand the nobility waving their flags. Yet even they cannot begin to express the meaning of victory as can, the dying loser who hears the other side celebrate its victory, while he himself, realizing his cause is lost, also feels his life is nearly over.

The author is obviously referring to the stupidity of todays' youth. Good luck!

Sorry, she was clinically depressed and I don't think she knew what she was writing most of the time. I don't see why she became such a famous poet.
