This is a great question!
What makes America powerful is it's history. We're coasting on the impressive achievements of our predessesors. The founding fathers have put together the most amazing constitution in modern history. We are generally, the most generous, compassionate and unfortunately gullible people in the world. We're coasting on our hard work and high standards. Our ethics and our true history of striving for democracy.
The follow up question should be this:
How long are we going to coast on the great work of our fore fathers? How long before our careless foreign policies are going to catch up with us? How long before corruption and greed undo the last bits of ethics and global responsibility which holds us together; intact. Our past is only going to fuel our power and progress for so long. I hope we get our second wind and revive nationalism and doing what's right for us and the world without an agenda. Short term gains we think we're making have always come back and bit us in the azz. History will prove that we're at a cross roads of sorts and if we don't choose wisely how we treat our elderly, our international fellow human beings and our own youth and work force, we're going to come to a rude awakening.
Thank you for asking an intelligent question. These are pretty rare.

We have the strongest and most advanced military in the world. We continue to have this even though we sell other countries military equipment and weapons. The reason we continue to stay on top is because we sell other countries stuff we don't use anymore because we've moved on to more sophisticated things. Our international trade is amongst the top as well as our industry and social diversity. We also have the richest economy in the world. More people make more money here than in any other country in the world. Middle class people here would be wealthy in a majority of other countries. All these things go together to help us stay atop the world power rankings.

The fact that everyone has a say in the government (we can contact our local politicians, and we vote for those in office), the hardworking citizens, the diversity of the resources we have (from Alaska to Florida, Hawaii to New York), and the fact we never let any country develop into anything close to a threat. Our children are more educated than adults in most foriegn countries, almost every single home has at least one or two cars, we all have shelter and food available to us, and we take care of our own.
And, of course, we have one kick-*** military!
