The text is from a Spanish folk song. Does the pine tree have a significant meaning in Spanish folk tradition and/or does the text have a symbolic meaning? Thanks!

Asturiana
To see if I could console myself,
I sought the comfort of a green pine;
seeing me weep, it wept.
And the pine, since it was green
seeing me weep, wept.

It could go back to a Pagan period when Mother Earth was worshiped. Some people felt that trees were their God. Even today there are some who believe trees have feelings and actually let out a silent scream when they are abused. Like the writer of the Poem wrote: " I sought the comfort of a green pine".
