I installed Spyware Terminator but my computer slowed right down. Microsoft Word, for instance, took several minutes to load. Was I doing something wrong or is this a problem with free spyware? I've now uninstalled it.

Myself I would stay away from "Spyware Terminator". It has been on the rouge list for quite some time. Maybe it is off now, I don't know.
If you want some really good free antispyware program I use, check out these links.
http://www.grisoft.com Download their free version of AVG Antivirus. Scans all 273,838 object in my system. Manual update. If you want to purchase you will get auto updates an a guard in the tray. The guard uses to much resources. The free uses little or no resources.
http://www.superantispyware.com Download their free version. This program is excellent Scans all 273,838 objects in my system and will usually find spyware missed by all others.
http://www.lavasoft.com Download their free for home personal use, Ad-adware Se Personal. This company is out of Sweden and has been around long before anybody ever thought of spyware.
http://www.emsisoft.com Download their free version of A2Squared Malware. They are out of Austria, excellent program like the AVG, scans for rogue dialers, hijackers, spyware, malware etc. etc.

spyware terminator is one of the better free spyware programs
it offers realtime protection...it is pretty decent in detection aand removal...not the best..but darn good for free

once u run a fullsystem scan with spyware terminator..u can enable (hips)
also..it comes with winclam antivirus.(it is safe to install along side current antivirus) this one is not active im not quiet sure what the problem coulda been...maybe u can try this...it is better i think..and free

Yes, steer clear of Spyware Terminator! Otherwise, as per Minddoctor but you might want to look at Avast.
