You look at the meter and it will most-likely say E for empty rather than F for Full.

Well thats depends... First of all do you have a car that uses a carburetor, or fuel injection? Carburetor engines dont need as high of fuel pressure as the injected cars do. since you didnt list any "Symptoms" Ill try to cover as many as I can..

Car runs, but runs rough?
Probably not the fuel pump...

Car will run at idle but stalls at high RPM..
Could be a weak fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter or on carbureted engines could also indicate a need to adjust the float level. Means that the engine is getting enough fuel at idle but when a bigger volume of fuel is needed, it starts to starve the engine for fuel because the fuel system cant keep up with the demand.

Car does not run at all but has spark.
Check the fuel pressure, if zero then you either have a bad pump or a severely clogged fuel filter. Also see if your fuel pump is getting power as well. You will either hear it, or you can test it with a meter or test light.

Car does not run, and has no spark
Probably not the fuel pump, i would start looking at the ignition system instead.

if you post your symptoms i can be more targeted here.. ill check back on ya.

I had to replace mine a week ago today.....i noticed for the past month or so that it would take a long time to turn over.....but it would always eventually start........once it was started there was no problem at all.....no rough riding or stalls.........then one day after filling the gas tank it wouldn't start at all......sounded like it wanted to but just wasn't getting that fuel......now that i have a new fuel pump it starts up quickly every time...

When a car stops pumping fuel, a new fuel pump is necessary.

check to see if you are getting fuel to you fuel filter. and check the gas to see if it is dirty. and if it is then you need a new fuel pump.

i own a repair shop, and first off it will start running rough,,being hard to start and the gas mileage will go down a lot on it also,,and it may stall out once in a while on you ,these are the most common signs of one going bad,and it may start up,when its cold and die some on you,,that's another sign of one of going bad also,if you have any of this happening to it right now,,it may need to be replaced,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s..,,have a good and safe x-mas.
