39 seems to be pretty average, I have 41 running just about always. My parent's computer normally has 35, and my wife's is somewhere near 40. It all depends on what you have running and what you are loading.
I wouldn't be worried with 39 active processes, start worrying if you get near 60 without warning or more system memory! lol.

This cannot be determined by the number of processes running, infact by the amount of memory that the processes are consuming. If the system is slowing down and programs are openig up later than normal, then you know that you have to turn off some processes. You can also use the task manager to determine the amount of resources being consumed.

21 running right now. Any number can be normal. If you are wondering what processes are attached to what software you can do a safe boot and look at your processes. Then you can run msconfig (from START, RUN)and turn things on and off for each boot, noticing which ones come on for which things you turn on. Another way is to open your running processes page and shut things down little by little.

39 is not bad, I have seen some with up to 80. I run at around 45 myself, of course I have Norton Suite which accounts for about 12 of them.

the more processes you have running the less free memory you'll have and it could also impact your cpu performance. I usually try to keep mine below 30. Right now mine is at 28 and my system is very snappy. Its really best to shut off the ones you don't need unless it isn't bothering you then there is really nothing to worry about.

I have 36 running.
31 (of mine) are critical. I have MSN, Firefox and Task Manager open. I also have Norton Internet Security running in the background.
Really, how many critical (system) processes you have depends on your OS, what version, etc...
