Burning a candle in the window goes back as far as there were candles and windows. The reasons are as varied as the people who display them. Some folks use them for bringing good, some for repelling evil and some for plain decoration. White candles are a symbol for purity, honesty, sincerity.

M.G. is on the right track, it did signal to travelers as a safe haven and your loved ones. Especially during the winter months when the nights are longer and a blizzard could blow up at anytime. If you saw the light you had shelter and food. Back in the 1800's the western part of the United States wasn't very populated by settlers and because lies and stories were told about the Indians the pioneers didn't trust them. I used to live in the Western United States for 8 years. I finally got out of there. I will not go back because of the winters they have!!!

Right, a Secret Society is going to pass out secrets here, to Yahoodiots and Yahooligans?!
How do you know that they aren't the followers of some spiritual movement that believes "if everyone lit just one little candle, what a bright world it would be"?
Or not, which ever is most scarier for you... You should get a pet.

"If the cat knocks it over, it is still going to start a fire"
-Sorry I don't really know what it is?
OMG it just hit me! Maybe it's a candle for a thought or a candle for a prayer. The Buddists would light a candle for a prayer and let it burn.....something something....

I once asked this question to a person who kept a candle by her window and she said that it was an old tradition to light the way for the travelers. I guess from before there were city lights. :)

My aunt does it for her son, my cousin. He died in a car wreck a while back. She says it's so he knows we are thinking about him.
