Iron may or may not be the problem. My son got horrible colic when I fed him Similac, and still had bad gas issues when I switched to Enfamil. The problem was, I later found out, that he needed soy milk, because of an allergy. I highly recommend Enfamil ProSobee Lipil if you're having issues.
Also, they've had problems with Similac Advanced with Iron before. They've had to recall it a few times, once due to plastic particles that found their way into the formula. You might want to beware of that.
Iron is reallly highly recommended for babies in their first year. I would try switching to soy or lactose-free formula before I'd give up the iron.
I hope you find something that works for you!

There is no best formula....do not change your baby's formula with out the doctors say so you can really mess up their system...some are from milk and some are from soy and iron is a factor too....granted a lot of doctors and hospitals put babies on certain formulas in hospitals because they have certain suppliers that they have agreements with but they choose certain ones for certain reasons for each baby...babies get constipated and spit up on all formulas that doesn't mean change it necessarily....if they are still on formula then they are under a year and should be seeing the pedi quite a bit...if they are not due soon set up an appointment to see pedi for concerns and see if they will change their formula

*sighs* I hate questions like these. Breastmilk is absolutely the best. Obviously your friend knows this, or she wouldn't have attempted breastfeeding at all, let alone continue trying after she developed difficulties. Baby formula is an acceptable substitute for breastmilk. Is it as good? No. Nothing is as good as mother's milk for a baby. However, there are lots of things she can do to make this whole experience better. She should make sure that she holds the baby when she's feeding, hold the baby close, just like she would if she were nursing. Make it a quiet, special time for her to bond with him, never prop a bottle! Make feeding time a special and loving time for them both. Plenty of people have been formula fed and turned out without any ill effects. And no, it is most definitely NOT true that breastfed babies never get sick. They may get less sick, or they may get well faster, but yes, they do get sick. They tend to have less allergies to food and things like that, they tend to not be obese, and they tend to not get ear infections as frequently, but they do still get sick. Of course she is going to grieve for the loss of breastfeeding, especially since it sounds as though her heart was so set on it. That's perfectly normal, just support her and tell her that she is still a wonderful Mom, and she did after all supply the baby with breastmilk for as long as she possibly could. Any breastfeeding is better than none.

My son had a hard time with that too, it had too much iron in it. The best in my opinion is Carnation. I was able to use it on all of my kids, and it tastes better too. If he is still throwing up after that he may be lactose intolerant, try Pro So-bee formula by Infamil. Iron can also constipate a baby. Try giving her a little bit of apple juice to help with it if switching formulas doesn't help. I don't know how old she is but my daughter had that problem and the Dr. told us to try it when she was 3 months old. It really helped.

Of course, always check with your pediatrician first.
But, my daughter was that way when she was born and my son did the same with Similac.
I switched my daughter who is 8 months now, to Nestle NAN. She has been on it for 5 months and It's awesome! It's closest to breastmilk and has a low dose of iron! She hasn't had any problems now! Iron does tend to constipate babies and too much of a mineral can upset the digestive tract.
Good luck!

I used Nestle Good Start with DHA/ARA. It's supposed to be very close to breastmilk for digesting.
We tried similac and the others with my son, but his little poopies started to be a peanut butter consistancy and I didn't like that when he was so young, so we switched to Nestle Good Start and my son's poops went back to being very similar to how it was when I breast fed.
I plan on using the same formula again with my next child, becuase I am expecting to have the same issues breastfeeding when I go back to work as I did the first time.

You can stay with Similac and just try the isomil which is soy. Carnation Good Start is an excellent formula too.

The best formula is breast milk...however, you should consult the baby's peditrician. The best formula(instead of breast milk) depends on what the baby likes and can tolerate. It will take several tries on differemt formulas until you find the "one". Sooo, buy the small cans until you get this issue resolved. Plus, please consult the doctor...they work with you on this...sometimes they will give you free samples.

I would consult my pediatrician first, but my kids always did really well on Enfamil. Maybe she need soy formula, that was my second child's problem with constipation and spit up.
