In WoW there are two types of skills, primary and secondary. Secondary skills are cooking, fishing and first aid. Primary skills are alchemy, tailoring, enchanting, herbalism, mining, skinning, leatherworking, blacksmithing, engineering, and with the new expansion, jewelcrafting.

Skinning, mining and herbalism are what's referred to as "gathering professions." Basically, you collect stuff. The rest are "crafting professions," where you make stuff. Collecting stuff is free, making stuff costs $$. If you want to make profit, remember that.

Skinning is the easiest gathering profession, as you're out killing stuff anyway for experience, so it's basically a "second loot" from the body. Not usable on humanoids. Skin everything you can and then re-sell it, either to vendors or through the auction house.

Herbalism is very profitable because it feeds into alchemy. Alchemy is potion making, and is really important in end-game play. Lots of folks who want to get a high alchemy skill without going out and collecting their own herbs, will pay for those components. The AH is your friend.

Mining, until recently, was probably the least beneficial gathering skill of the three primaries. At high end you get some good things, but in the early stages, not so much. With the new skill, jewelcrafting, that's likely to change. Jewelcrafting comes with a skill called prospecting, allowing the craftsman to search a stack of 10 ore (obtained by miners) to prospect for gems. When the new expansion releases in January, everyone that wants to skill up jewelcrafting will need gems, ore and metal bars. All of which come from mining.

Fishing is also a gathering profession, and depending on the economy of your server, can be fairly lucrative, starting in about your 20's. Oily blackmouth, Firefin snapper and Stonescale eel are all fish needed for alchemy recipes. You can also come across "floating wreckage" while fishing. Fishing in these can yield trunks which can contain money, cloth, leather, potions, and sometimes uncommon items and recipes.

You want to make some cash, go with two gathering profesisons, plus fishing, and be serious about reselling them, particularly through your auction house.

First off you want cooking and fishing. Level them both up and learn to make Savory Deviate Delight. I doesn't sell for a lot but it will always sell. Then you want to learn herbalism and mining. These are the two gathering classes that will make you the most money as they are the ones who's resources are used to make a lot of the potions, vials, and armors in the end game content. Then you want to find an item that sells for a lot and farm it. I picked. Crimson Whelpling. Its a pet that sells for a decent amount and drops about once and hour for me in Wetlands from the Crimson and Flamesnout Whelps in the far West side. If you are doing all this and not wasting money on the stupid things you don't need, you'll easily have enough gold to get what you need when you need it.

Mining will make you a good amount of money. The first thing you will mine is copper ore. If you smelt them into copper bars, a stack of 20 will go for anywhere from 40s-1g in the Auction House. Personally, I don't pay more than 40s for a stack, but I know they sell for more to other people. A copper node will usually yield 2-4 copper ore, so it shouldn't take too long to get a good amount. Look for rocky areas...hills, etc.

best way to make money is to get a job! Depending on what class you are try doing enchanting, skinning (i believe the easiest), mining are some ways to gather material to sell to the vendors or even better yet at the auction house. There are always ppl willing to pay crazy amounts of money for anything. Hope this helps.
