I don't have a dryer (for environmental reasons) and can no longer hang towels outdoors because of air pollution, so I line-dry laundry indoors. Mildew in towels is a major problem in these circumstances, especially during the humid summer, but I have gotten rid of the problem completely simply by switching to thinner all-cotton towels that dry relatively quickly. Those big plush towels look nice on the rack, but they are breeding grounds for mildew, and I've never found a way to get it out of a towel once it's there -- even bleach does not seem to work. Cheap, thin towels are the way to go!

They smell that way as they were probably damp when you put them away. Best way to get rid of this is to bleach the towels if they are white during a wash with your regular detergent. Follow the instructions on the bottle to add the proper amount. This will sanitize the towels and next time make sure they are fully dry when taking them out of the dryer and also hang them up to dry once you use them as throwing them directly into the laundry bin for a week will cause the same problem again.

Wash them thoroughly in a good detergent, using hot water. Use bleach if they're white and a bleach alternative product if they're color.
Dry them thoroughly in the dryer.
When you are finished using one (i.e., after a bath or shower) hang it up to air-dry instead of throwing it immediately into a hamper.
That is what will keep it from smelling mildewed.

Be sure to take your towels out of the washer within a few hours to dry them or you will start out a with bad smell although you can't smell it as well when they are dry. That happens to me if I leave my towels in the washer overnight. I hate that smell!

The towels are probably moist. Use ammonia or lemon scented ammonia in the wash. Removes the odor unlike fabric softner alone which might mask the odor.

Are you washing them in hot water? That seems to help and a good fabric softener.
