Probably close to a thousand dollars, in my opinion. As for me, I use this article I found on a blog to rein in my spending this holiday season :

This is the first year that we can't afford anything for anybody,my wife and I have not bought gifts for each other for years but this year has been very tough. Our kids are all grown up and do understand how social security works, the amount we have coming in does not even cover living expenses let alone all the medical insurances and co-pays and hospitals. We both had stays in the hospital this year,I had two.We get our joy from our church and at least can still keep up our tithes. The reason for the season is our LORD JESUS,I think people loose focus during Christmas and go way into debt to make their happiness.

Our kids are 21 and 19 respectively.
They get to know the amount we are willing to spend and then draw up lists that we can choose from so the money is spent on things they want not on Xmas garbage.

Typically we give them each $350 - $500

Just remember it is not the amount that matters, but the thought that counts. But to answer your question, I think I read somewhere that is around $500-$600. I think I spent around $650. Merry Christmas.

I guess, for my family members, it averages out to about 50 bucks a person, but I have a small family, and I spend more on my husband and son and less on my other relatives, particularly my emotionally abusive brother-in-law. It would be less if I had to buy gifts for a larger family.

Unfortunately as you get older and the family grows the prices go down. This year my budget was 40$ each---there's 15 immediate, and 25$ friends and long distant family. It really is about the gift anyway.RIGHT?

Way more than most of us can really afford, then we end up paying for months and months to get caught up again. But it isn't the cost of the gift,it is the thought and feelings put to use to get or give it.

We set a limit of $60 this year for everyone. We usually spend a little bit more, but we bought a house this year. I think it's the thought that counts anyways. :)
