The umpires conferred at the end of the half inning and announced that the Yankees were to be awarded another run on the board. The play in question possibly involved some of these factors: did runner tag too early? was protest of runner leaving too early upheld? Did runner tagging from third cross plate before third out made elsewhere on the field?

There were a confluence of unusual factors that lead to this confusing ruling.

Don't think it was against the Red Sox. Don't think it involved a play where umpire ruled that runners advance a base. I think it was one of those extremely weird situations where there were 4 outs in the inning and one method had to be discounted. There was definitely a challange to whether a runner left too early, which may have somehow been rendered moot. It was a unique set of factore that lead to the ruling.

I have been using baseball-reference for many years. While it does now have all the boxscores from retroseheet, a boxscore will NOT show the nuanced circumstances required to identify what happened in this particular game. Boxscores don't say "umpires reversed prior ruling after the top of the 6th and awared the Yankess an additional run". That is why I am asking the question here. Hopefully, someone out there will simply remember what game it was and exactly what happened. Then I can look at the boxscore and see what's reflected there.

Mosh - How do you know this is the game in question? Do you remember the game? Where does the boxscore indicate that a run was added to the yankees total well after the inning was over. This may, in fact, be the right game. How did you find this game on retro sheet? The boxscore certainly doesn't indicate a use of the 4 out rule?

I don't remember the exact game and so forth, but I do remember that it involved a runner on third for the Yankees and a catch in foul territory in which the fielder fell into the stands. The umpires forgot to award the runner (or runners) one base. But the catch wasn't the third out (couldn't have been) and the umpires didn't award a run retroactively. The game may have been against the Red Sox. If I remember right, a player or coach told Torre about the mistake and he managed to bring it to the umpires' attention before the next pitch. Otherwise, the umpires would not have been allowed by rule to correct their error.

What I would imagine is if a non-force 3rd out is made, anyone who scored prior to that out in that play, counts. So if a person is tagged out right after another player crosses home, the run counts even though the 3rd out was made. So they would conference a little to make sure he scored before the 3rd out was made. That's my best guess.

http://retrosheet.org/ may have more info. The site has boxscores of most every major league game.

I think the guy didn't touch the plate. And he had to run out and tag it during innings before the ump would allow the game to progress. Its possible. But I am not certain.

I found it!!! (-: July 1, 1989. On an attempted squeeze bunt by Tolleson in the eighth inning with runners on first and third with one out the ball was popped to catcher, Geren was doubled off at first for the third out but Mike Pagliarulu had already scored. the fourth out rule was ennacted because of there not being an appeal at third base and since this wasn't a force at first, the run counted.
