I think the only way mice can enter your house must be your pipe or any tube as such. Have your house fumigated or you can buy some stuff for feeding them that will bring them out and then they may die unlike the rat poison which causes them to kill at some hidden corner. Usually it's good to keep this gum at places where you found mice droppings.

Call and exteminator, but you will also have to check the foundation or your house to make sure that all possible areas for them to come in has been closed off.
Also, despite what some people think, Cat's are not as usefull as you might thing, and the Dander doesn't deter the rodents from coming in. If mice are hungry enough, or cold enough They will come in.

A little tip is the old fashion mouse trap with peanutbutter. Try not to keep anything warm where you found the droppings, like stuff animals, blankets, clothes, anything that they can curl up in. Don't bring any food or anything sweet to attract them. If it does go away hire an exterminator.

this befell to me many years in the past, and it ended up being a squirrel. It became nesting in the mattress in the spare bedroom that it burrowed a hollow in, so it became under no circumstances seen when I went to envision on the noise. I left the door open one morning only to work out if some thing would ever come out of that room, and it ran down the steps...rather a lot gave me a heart attack!! *LOL*

Get a cat, after the cat takes care of the problem, his dander will help with keeping the mice out.

Congrats and welcome home. Don't panic. Get some Decon, available at grocery stores, hardware, etc. Place several under cabinets, beside fridge, in the basement and before long there won't be any mousees. You also will not be bothered by smelly rotting carcasses.
