Cos you're concerned for their well-being. I admit to having asked someone this myself, & they turned round & said "Well I wouldn't be alright if I was feeling lousy, would I?"

Because you want to comfort them and it's a natural response to say "Are you alright?", I always say it when i see someone upset or crying. You must be a caring person and easily saddened by crying or someone being upset. I suppose it's because if it were you in that situation you would want to be comforted. That's as good as i can explain it.

because you are a jelly and if you do not establish an empathetic relationship, you will be thrown across the room in anger or eaten as comfort food. Your saying is a natural defense mechanism thought up over thousands of years by jellys.

Good luck

You obviously know something isn't right when someone is crying, but you ask because you are good natured and want to see if you can help them with their problem.

Maybe you hope that they are all right and by asking them you don't need to do anything else for them. Perhaps you are afraid that they are not all right and you are hoping they will lie back to you and you wont have to do anything. By asking the obvious the other person will probably think you are either too stupid or too insensitive to help.

All of the above.

Also deep down you don't want to get caught up in a tricky situaiton, so you're giving them one last chance to say they're fine.

I think its probably human instinct to ask the obviously stupid question or say the obviously stupid thing, like when you are told somebody has died you almost always say your joking. Its daft but true.

Because if you just go up to somebody and start helping, it may be the wrong thing to do if they don't want your help....That is why when you go up to them you ask first if they want you to know what is going on and if they want your help.
You are also very caring and kind and helpful....Brownie points for you!
