In some scenes, Gary Sinese sat in a specially designed wheelchair. The chair was designed by special effects wizard Ricky Jay, and featured a thin, slanting seat, so that Gary's legs were folded underneath and not visible.

In the most amazing scenes, though, the fine folks at George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic removed Gary's legs with the help of computers.

They put up a green screen and covered his legs with green material, that way when they film his body it looks like his legs are missing. Then they tied his actual legs to his thighs so he'd have to crawl around with his hands, during some of the scenes. Robert Zemeckis is notorious for doing green screen and computer tricks in his movies. He did a Tales from the crypt episode starring Humphrey Bogart.

Computer animation. You know the "blue screen" they use for many backgrounds? Well for that scene they used "blue cloth" to cover his legs (making them appear invisible) and computer animated the furniture around him.

I remember watching how they did that special effect some time ago.
