If you mean the first ever Mario game, 1983, the arcade Mario Bros. which featured the Mario Brothers in an arcade style game where you had to jump under the enemies to flip them over, and collect cards by beating the flashing enemy at the end.

The Super Mario Bros. were released IIRC in 1986. That features Mario and Luigi in the 2-D platformer that is world reknowned. Due to the technological age at the time, programmers were only able to transfer Mario into the water worlds by means of pipes, because they weren't able to animate or even program it so that he could jump out of the water.

Super Mario Bros 2, wasn't even supposed to be a Mario game! It was supposed to be about an arabian family, before Nintendo bought the rights to the game and remade it Mario.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the first in the series to actually show Mario jumping out of the water. This was thanks to advances in programming. It also used alot of other special items that were not previously available in earlier games such as, Frog suit, Tanooki suit, Kuribo's Shoe, and the Racoon Leaf as well as many other secrets waiting to be found.

Lastly, a fun fact about Super Mario and the Legend of Zelda. If you ever watched the Super Mario Bros. Super Show, aired in the mid-80s, you would have seen the Legend of Zelda cartoon. In one of the cartoons, Link plays a whistle, which incidently looks exactly like the ones found in SMB3, to the same familiar tune. Which prompts a whirlwind to come and whisp Zelda and himself to safety.

i remember as a little kid in 1982 having something called a "game and watch" they where made by Nintendo it was about the size of the current Nintendo DS and it also opened up , it was orange it had 2 old fashioned LCD black and white screen screen inside a bit like a Nintendo DS actually !.
It was called Donkey Kong and i believe it was Marios first UK appearance there was a Monkey at top of screen who had the Princess in a cage and he used to throw barrels down at you and you had to jump over them and get to top to rescue princess and then again and again faster and faster !

heres a nice pic i just found , bloody hell i wish id kept it they seem to be worth a fair bit on ebay.
