Society in America is becoming increasingly uptight. Everything that everyone does, wants, has, doesen't have revolves around what they, the unhappy people think is themselves.
I really wish that brutal honesty were put more in perspective in these days. Everyone is so terribly worried about stepping on other peoples toes, we've failed to know what communication is anymore.
Technology allows us to hide everything, internet wise, and at the same time, reveal it. Too many services are there to find things out about others that not everyone should have a right to know.
I think the real reason why people are so unhappy these days, is because privacy seems non-existent, and how can you blame them for being unhappy about that? Some things should be kept secret, but too many other people are nosy, and need to know everyone elses business, thank the internet for that. I had a dream the other night that the Earth was young, there were no buildings, no roads, none of the typical hustle and bustle you see and hear about every day. Also in the dream the people were very happy and carefree, something that doesen't happen in this country anymore.
If alot of activities would stop being so commercialized, I really think people would be alot happier.

My personal theory is that we live in such a fast paced United States that we don't take time to slow down and relax and think about the more positive and simple things in life. And I also believe that work doesn't truly stop at your doorstep anymore. With internet and cellphones and such there's always a way somebody could be working from home. I think overall it leads to a very unhappy group of people who are totally focused on work and what needs to be improved or "worked on" rather than simple, happy things.

People are too materialistic. Too focused on appearances. Too busy. Too stressed. Under appreciated. Victims. Lonely.
Unable to see the good in others. Unable to see passed labels. Unable to see past culture, skin co lour, language barriers.
I have never thought there was so much anger in people, so much aggression and so much sadness in people until I came here on Answers.

because there's always someone with something better than you, or gets more attention than you or has something you dont have and that just makes you unhappy I guess

marketing and advertising pressure, peer pressure, social pressure, having too much on their platter, wanting to experience everything and have everything but not having enough time or money. you can thank planes trains and automobiles for the "wanting to experience everything", and the aforementioned pressures on not having enough money
