I asked this professor to write me a reccomendation letter because i only have a few professors, and this one taught me 2 classes.

what do you think> because i will nopt be able to see the letter of course, it will be sent directly to the grad school to which i am applying.

advice please????

thanks!!

My husband is a part-time prof. and he gives good recommendations to all the students who ask him for it. He says he would only be happy to help his students for their future.

In your case, you said, your prof. gave you a C and then an A. Now, it could be that your performance in the first semester was poor but then it improved in the later semester. It shows that your performance improved. That is a + point.

You will have to see, how your prof is with you. If he has always been helpful and forthcoming to you, then you should ask him without hesitation. If you are not comfortable, then maybe you should avoid him. It is for you to decide.

At the same time, it also makes a difference on how you ask the prof. for a recommendation. In the request letter or email, you should always praise the prof. and tell him/her how helpful he/she and their class has been to you and how immensely you have benefited. And hence you would like them to give you a recommendation. The prof. will definitely give you a good letter.

Generally, unless you have really been a pain to him/her or he/her has an axe to grind with you, they would always give you a good letter as they would also want to see you succeed in life.

I'm in college too and I have heard a story like yours. The student asked the professor what they wrote after the letter was sent. The professor undoubtedly will say that you have improved (if you went from a C to an A) and there's nothing wrong with that.

I think you should have the professor wrote the letter not only because you had him/her for 2 classes, but because you are pretty sure he or she thinks highly of you. If he or she doesn't think highly of you, why would you want them to write the letter?

Whoever you end up asking to write the recommendation, I think you could ask them what they wrote if you think it would give you more peace of mind. Totally your call, but that's what I think.

Well, why did you ask this professor to write you the letter in the first place? It seems that you decided based on how you improved in the class. It might be wise to inform that proffesor to focus on your improvement from the prior class to now. Also, most professors don't agree to write a letter of reccomendation just to say bad things about the student; these letters are usually a proffesor's only chance to have a say in their student's job future. They also view these letters as huge compliments. Don't worry!

It is possible that your professor could give you a bad review...but that depends on a lot of different things.

Just because he/she agreed does not mean it will necessarily be good. They could have not wanted to tell you no, and will write the letter giving a bad or ok recommendation knowing that you'll never see it.

That is why those types of letters go right to the school instead of being funneled through students...it promotes honesty from professors.

Professors will absolutely write you bad recommendations. In my case, I was leaving one grad program to attend another. Needless to say, my professors at my initial institution didn't take kindly to my leaving for another school and wrote bad recommendations (or so I found out later after asking the institution reasons why I did not make the cut). I did not get into that school and had to apply to another with another set of rec's. Got into that one and rubbed it in their faces.

I think that if the professor was not planning on writing a good recommendation then he would have politely declined your request. You're orobably going to be ok.

I think that it is extremely unlikely that a professor would write you a bad recomendation unless that professor really disliked you and was such a small person that they wanted to jeopardise your future. I think it'll be fine.

IMHO, you pretty much want it to be a slam dunk. If you're not sure, don't risk it.
