Many people get iTunes the software and the iTunes store confused. You do need the iTunes software in order to put music on the iPod. The software is free - comes on a CD with iPods or you can download it from Apple's website. You use iTunes to manage your music library. You can put any music you have on it - mp3s, aiff, you can rip CDs into iTunes, whatever. All for free.

Now, integrated with iTunes software is the Store where you have to pay $.99 a song. The songs are in a special format that limits how often you can copy them, how many computers they are played on, and they can ONLY be played with iTunes or on an iPod. However, you can use iTunes software and never once buy a single from the iTunes store.

Don't buy the songs, it's a complete waste of money. I just put 160 free songs on my iPod by downloading them off YouTube. Pay 160 dollars for that? I think not.

Yes you need iTunes to put songs on your iPod. No you do not have to buy it. It came on a CD with your iPod. If you lost the CD you can download it again from Apple's web site. Unless you already have MP3s stored on your hard drive you will have to pay for songs, however.

iTunes is free. You only need it to put your music in iPOD. Don't buy music from iTunes store because they are costly and no other media player will play their format.

Just rip your CDs into your computer and put them into your iPOD or get music from your friends and get their CDs into your computer.
playing around with iTUNES is fun once you get familiar with it though. Good luck to you.
